Sonnet #8 – For The Time Being

One day my name will be public knowledge
Coming from the lips of everyday folk
My face will be a popular image
Money won’t be an issue, no longer broke
I’ll write without fear, away from the crowd
Every word making beauty for them to behold
All I do, all I say, will make you feel proud
And the children will want to be me when they’re old
I’ll travel the world, still writing somehow
Leaving love and inspiration in my wake
I might seem deluded but trust me right now
A perfectly noble celebrity I’ll make

But for the time being, I’ll let another
Stand in the limelight while I be a mother

Sonnet #7 – Realisation

Just when I thought that it had all ended
That my heart couldn’t take anymore of you
When I was past the point of being mended
I never expected us to pull through
But when I lay on that hospital bed
With you sat beside me on that hard chair
The nurse with the scanner pressed onto me said
If we look at the screen we’ll see our child there
Silently gazing at the life we had made
A tiny flicker showing the beat of it’s heart
And in this moment out arguments fade
It won’t be long until parenthood starts

In that life changing second we know it’s enough
To ignore all our problems and give you our love

Sonnet #6 – The Sonnet of Sonnets

All days are nights to see till I see thee
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Thine eyes I love, and they, as pitying me
Who art as black as hell, as dark as night
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
To be death’s conquest and make worms thine heir
And let your love even with my life decay
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
That thereby beauty’s rose might never die
When forty winters shall beseige thy brow
But as the marigold at the sun’s eye
And die as fast as they see others grow

O cunning Love! with tears thou keep’st me blind,
Lest eyes well-seeing thy foul faults should find.

Sonnet #5 – Safe Place

There is a place I often find myself
When overwhelmed, upset or just alone
Cruel existence is put on a shelf
Any kind of technology is unknown
Don’t ask me to paint a picture in your mind
It is not made of matter or substance
Not a trace of reality will you find
But wonderful illusion in it’s absence
It can materialise as a bookshop
Or a darkening forest of harmony
An awe-inspiring view from a rooftop
Even a beloved childhood memory

But however I perceive it to appear
It has the power to make the path seem clear

Sonnet #4 – Valentine

Don’t ask me to be your Valentine, sweet
Cupid can point his arrow away from me
Hearts, cards and flowers won’t make us complete
And neither will getting down on one knee
You needn’t shower me with pointless things
Or words that someone unknown has written
About undying love and hearts with wings
About being “meant to be” or completely smitten
I’ve no interest in meaningless presents
Wrapped in paper more beautiful than I
Spend no money on what love “represents”
Please don’t compare me to the nighttime sky

I don’t need any of these things to show love
Because the way you make me feel is enough

Sonnet #3 – Gran

I miss the way you held onto my face
Whenever you were kissing me goodbye
Then waving in the window from your place
I love the way you’d tell stories and sigh
Lost in memories of an age now gone
You’d tell me how beautiful you used to be
You were the girl every boy had a crush on
Even with age you were wonderful to me
Sitting in your kitchen with a cigarette
Hearing “Tea Brian?” and hot water pour
Banging pans as you cook I’ll never forget
Those small and simple things I love you for

Not a day goes by that I don’t miss you
But every time you cross my mind, I smile too

Sonnet #2 – Warmth in Winter

The frozen ground crunches under my feet
The chill makes the hairs on my arm stand on end
When my warmer breath and the cold air meet
I watch the silver mist that only winter can send
Curling outwards from my shivering lips
And disappearing in bitter regret
I stroke patterned leaves with my fingertips
The more they crack, the prettier they get
Admiring the white sparkle of webs
Wondering where the spiders are hiding
Escaping the weather on scurrying legs
This painful beauty the season will bring

But however the outside will transform
The thought of you will keep my insides warm

Sonnet #1 – Immortalised

This is the final attempt I can make
To make you love me the way I love you
I can’t comprehend what else it would take
To conjure from your mouth what you know is true
Desperation is seen as a weakness
But with no strengths, there is nothing to me
Without caressing my skin you will guess
From the blue tinge of my lips you will see
I am now immortal within your mind
You will never forget the image here
A cure for the guilt you will never find
I wonder whether you will shed a tear

People say they would die for the one they love
Well now I have, it is done, is that enough??
